So, you’ve decided travel insurance is worth it, huh?

Now, explore the ins and outs of getting travel insurance coverage for your next trip. We’ll go into detail about the different types of travel insurance available and costs you might expect. We will also share some travel insurance providers whose policies may best suit your plans and needs.

Let’s dive in!

1) Assess Your Needs

Start by determining the type of insurance coverage you require based on your trip’s destination, duration, activities, and personal circumstances. Consider factors like medical coverage, trip cancellation protection, and baggage insurance.

A few of the more popular travel insurance coverage types include:

Trip Cancellation Insurance

Life is unpredictable, and, sometimes, you may need to cancel your trip due to unforeseen circumstances. Getting trip cancellation insurance ensures your financial investment is protected. You may be reimbursed for non-refundable expenses like flights or tours.

Travel Medical Insurance

Traveling internationally might mean your regular health insurance doesn’t cover medical expenses abroad. International travel medical insurance provides coverage for medical emergencies and necessary treatments during your trip. This gives you peace of mind in case of unexpected health issues.

Baggage and Personal Belongings Insurance

Losing your bags or having your personal belongings stolen can be incredibly inconvenient. This type of insurance provides compensation for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage and belongings, helping you replace essential items.

Travel Delay Insurance

Flight delays and cancellations are common occurrences. Getting insurance for travel delays covers additional expenses like accommodations, meals, and transportation when you’re stranded due to unforeseen disruptions.

Group Travel Insurance

Ideal for families, friends, or organized groups, group travel insurance offers an umbrella policy for multiple travelers, often at a discounted rate.

Emergency Medical Evacuation Insurance

In extreme cases where medical facilities are inadequate, emergency medical evacuation insurance can cover the cost of transportation to a facility capable of providing proper care.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance

While no one wants to think about it, accidents can happen. This type of insurance provides a benefit to your beneficiaries in case of accidental death or covers medical expenses in the event of dismemberment or disability resulting from an accident.

Getting travel insurance for your rental car is a must when driving internationally!

Rental Car Insurance

If you plan to rent a car during your trip, consider rental car insurance. This can cover damages to the rental vehicle and protect you from financial liability in case of accidents.

Cancel for Any Reason Insurance (CFAR)

While CFAR travel insurance might come with additional costs, it provides greater peace of mind than some other insurance options. This coverage offers flexibility by allowing you to cancel your trip for any reason. Even if it’s not covered by other policies.

Adventure or Sports Travel Insurance

If you’re planning adventure activities such as skiing, scuba diving, or hiking, standard travel insurance might not cover potential risks. Adventure or sports travel insurance can provide coverage tailored to high-risk activities.

Pet Travel Insurance

Getting travel insurance for your pets can be especially useful when taking them on trips, vacations, or even moving to a new location. You won’t have to worry about things like unexpected veterinary bills in an unfamiliar place, quarantine costs, or third-party liability in case something goes wrong.

Getting travel insurance for your pets is a worthwhile investment if you're planning on taking them on vacation.

2) Research and Compare

After assessing your coverage needs, the next step in getting travel insurance coverage is to research reputable travel insurance providers. Compare policies available to you against each other nad your needs. You can do this online or via phone through insurance companies or travel agencies. You may also want to ask for recommendations from family or friends who have recently traveled.

Popular Travel Insurance Providers

As a starting point, some popular providers to obtain coverage from include:

  • Allianz Travel Insurance: Known for its comprehensive coverage options and strong customer service.
  • Travel Guard | AIG US: Offers a wide range of plans and benefits, including those for trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and baggage loss.
  • World Nomads: Popular among adventure travelers, it provides coverage for a variety of adventure activities and offers flexible policy options.
  • Travelex Insurance Services: Offers various plans with customizable coverage and options for cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage.
  • American Express Travel Insurance (AMEX): American Express offers a range of insurance options to its cardholders. Find coverage for everything from trip cancellation, trip interruption, travel medical emergencies, to baggage loss, and more.

*Of the list above, I’ve only had personal experience with World Nomads. Though I‘ve never filed a claim, I found their flexible policies, website UI, and customer service to be great.

AMEX makes getting travel insurance easy if you're a cardholder.

Remember to carefully read all policy documents and understand the coverage limits, deductibles, exclusions, and any optional add-ons. Make sure the policy aligns with your travel plans and preferences.

During the research phase of getting travel insurance, it’s also important to request quotes from providers you’re considering. This will give you an estimate of the cost associated for the coverage you’re interested in and allow you to compare options.

How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost?

The cost of travel insurance depends on what coverage you obtain. It’s often influenced by factors like trip duration, the age and amount of travelers, destination, coverage type, coverage limits, trip cost, health history, and the policy provider itself. Collectively, these elements determine the insurance premium you’ll pay.

In short, the greater the coverage, duration, traveler age and duration, the more costly the plan.

For basic travel coverage, you might expect to pay around $50 to $100 for a 1-week trip. For comprehensive coverage, including higher coverage limits, additional benefits like rental car coverage, and coverage for adventure activities, the cost could range from $100 to $200 or more.

As a baseline, expect travel insurance to cost between 3% to 7% of your total trip cost.

Factor this expense into your travel budget.

3) Provide Information & Payment

After you’ve chosen a suitable policy, the next steps of getting travel insurance involve providing essential information and making the required payment to secure your coverage.

Along with asking for your personal details (full name(s) of traveler(s), date of birth, address, contact info, medical history), your insurance provider may ask for your trip details. This includes the dates of your travel, the destination(s), and any planned activities or excursions.

Fill this information out to the best of your ability and move along to the payment processing stage.

Most insurance providers offer various payment methods, including credit/debit cards and online payment systems. Some might also accept bank transfers or checks.

Remember to make sure the payment gateway is secure and to review all documents and policy effective dates before submitting your details.

4) Keep a Copy for Your Records

After purchasing the policy right for you, you’ll receive confirmation documents, which may include your policy number or certificate and important contact information for assistance during your trip.

Keep copies (physical & digital!) of all your policy documents, receipts, and any communications related to your insurance while you travel. These will be valuable if you need to file a claim or have questions during your trip.

5) Travel With Confidence

With your travel insurance in place, you can now embark on your journey with confidence, knowing that you’re protected against (most) unforeseen events.

Have a great trip!
