What to Expect at Ausable Chasm

Ausable Chasm, NY is nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks” for a reason. It has an uncanny resemblance to the famous Grand Canyon in Arizona, albeit on a much smaller scale. The two-mile long gorge and towering walls of sandstone, limestone and granite are awe-inspiring and iconic.

In short, it’s basically a nature-lovers’ paradise.

Expect to spend anywhere from two hours to two days here because there are several activities available at Ausable Chasm to make the most of your time:

1. Hiking

If you’re like me and love a good hike, Ausable Chasm won’t disappoint. From easy walks to more challenging hikes, the chasm offers a variety of hiking trails for all levels of experience. The best part? Whichever trail you take, you’ll be sure to see stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The trails are open year round but the land is privately owned so, basic admission is required to access them.

Here are a few hiking trails within Ausable Chasm that I recommend checking out:

  • Inner Sanctum Trail (1 mile)
  • Rim Walk Trail (2 miles)
  • Dry Chasm Trail (1.5 miles)
  • Rainbow Falls/Elephant’s Head Vista (1/2 mile)

Basic admission grants you access to a majority of the chasm’s trail system. An extra fee is required for the inner trails that require guides to navigate through.

2. Rock Climbing

For the climbers out there, Ausable Chasm has several rock climbing routes that are sure to challenge and excite you. With varying degrees of difficulty, these routes offer something for everyone. But before you strap on your climbing shoes and chalk up your hands, remember to register with the park management. Follow their guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable climbing experience.

One of the most popular climbing routes is the Chasm View Wall, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the chasm and surrounding forest. Its difficulty ranges from 5.6 to 5.12.

Another exciting route is the South Wall, which requires climbers to navigate a variety of challenging features, including cracks, ledges, and overhangs.

Happy climbing!

3. River Rafting

A 15-30-minute guided rafting tour down the Ausable River is a thrilling way to experience the beauty of Ausable Chasm. The river flows through the heart of the chasm and gives incredible views of the towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls from a new perspective.

Depending on the level of difficulty chosen, the rapids can range from gentle and scenic to heart-pumping and adrenaline-fueled.

The group I was a part of accidentally took on the rapids backwards! Luckily, the experienced guide accompanying us provided expert instruction on paddling techniques and ensured the safety of all participants.

4. Scenic Tours (For The Historians Out There)

If you’re interested in learning more about the geological and historical significance of Ausable Chasm, there are guided tours available that offer an in-depth exploration of this unique natural wonder.

One of the most popular tours is the Adventure Trail Tour, which takes visitors on a journey through the chasm’s rugged terrain, including narrow passages, cascading waterfalls, and towering cliffs. Along the way, guides share insights into the geological forces that created the chasm, as well as the role it has played in the region’s history.

For those who prefer a more leisurely pace, the Classic Tour offers a scenic stroll through the chasm’s winding trails, with stops at several points of interest, including Rainbow Falls and Elephant’s Head.

5. Photography

Ausable Chasm is a photographer’s dream destination, offering some of the most stunning natural scenery in the Adirondacks. Its towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and crystal-clear streams create a breathtaking landscape that is truly unique.

One of the best ways to capture the beauty of the chasm is by walking the trails and photographing the scenery at different angles and perspectives. But, you can also (carefully) take photos from inside the chasm if you’re touring or rafting as well.

 6. Camping

For those looking to stay the night, you can camp at Ausable Chasm, NY with both tent and RV sites available. Prices for staying overnight start at $30 but may increase during peak season.

Campsites range from rustic tent sites to full-service RV sites with electric and water hookups. Each campsite is equipped with a fire pit and picnic table, providing the perfect setting for a cozy evening by the campfire.

Reserve your spot here or opt for a hotel stay in nearby Plattsburgh for a more comfortable and convenient stay.

Tips For Visiting Ausable Chasm

If you’re planning to visit Ausable Chasm, here are a few tips to help you make the most of your visit. After all, we all want to have a good time, right?

When to Go

If you’re planning on participating in any of the more involved activities like the riverwalk or rafting, plan to visit Ausable Chasm between late May and June. Tours run seasonally and weather conditions in Spring/Summer tend to be best.

If you’re headed towards the trails only, you may find April or September to be a nice time to visit, though, they are open year-round.

I, personally, visited Ausable Chasm on the Fourth of July holiday weekend and had a great time. There was, however, about a 30-minute wait for the rafting part of my “Classic Tour”.

What to Wear

Aside from wearing sunscreen, comfortable, closed-toed shoes and quick-dry activewear are a must! You’ll be moving around quite a bit and, if you go river rafting, there’s a chance you’ll get wet. Consider bringing a wet bag, too!

Note: Some tours of the inner chasm require you to wear helmets and life jackets. You may want to rent a locker at the visitor’s center for the duration of your visit for hats and loose belongings. Or, better yet, leave them at home for this trip.

Who to Bring

Ausable Chasm, NY is a great destination for a wide range of visitors. It leaned family-friendly with many children and parents walking around when I was there, but it’s an excellent stop for couples and solo travelers, too.

With that said, there are a few points to keep in mind:

  • Wheelchair Access: Unfortunately, Ausable Chasm is currently NOT wheelchair accessible. Those with limited mobility may have difficulties maneuvering around the chasm.
  • Young Children: Children under 30 pounds are not permitted to raft due to safety concerns.
  • Pets: While pets are welcome at the Ausable Chasm campground, they are not permitted on the trails, again, for safety reasons.

Staying Safe at Ausable Chasm

While Ausable Chasm is a beautiful destination to explore and visit, all outdoor activities come with an inherent risk.

Remember to listen to the guides, follow posted signs, and respect all barriers and fenced-off areas. Staying alert of your surroundings and remaining cautious when walking on wet surfaces can also greatly reduce the risk of accidents to you and your party.

Additionally, don’t forget to take care of yourself. Stay hydrated and nourished throughout the day, and always be aware of your physical limits!

Ausable Chasm was used as a filming location for many movie scenes, including the 1993 adventure film “Cliffhanger”, starring Sylvester Stallone.

Things to Do Near Ausable Chasm

While Ausable Chasm is a popular site, it’s not the only attraction in the Adirondacks worth visiting. To get the most out of your stay, I would recommend considering some of the other sites and scenes in the area:

  • Ausable Brewing Company: If you’re interested in trying local craft beer, the Ausable Brewing Company in Keeseville offers a selection of beers brewed on site, as well as food and live music.
  • Burlington, VT: Take the Port Kent ferry over Lake Champlain to bustling Burlington, VT. Explore the lively waterfront, quaint shops on Church St., and sip on your choice of the many craft beers local to the area.
  • Babbie Rural & Learning Farm Museum: Experience the rural life of Northern New York while meeting cute farm animals, learning about sustainable agriculture, and enjoying the scenic beauty of the Adirondack foothills.

Is Ausable Chasm Worth It?

Ultimately, whether or not visiting New York’s Ausable Chasm is worth it depends on your interests, preferences, and willingness to explore the great outdoors.

Visiting Ausable Chasm, NY can be an unforgettable experience for those who love nature and outdoor adventures. The stunning beauty of the chasm and the diverse range of activities available, such as hiking, rafting, and rock climbing, make it a worthwhile destination for many.

I, for one, hope to visit again soon.
